ORIGINS OF HALLOWEEN / Origen de Halloween

Halloween se remonta al tiempo de los antiguos celtas en las islas Británicas. Eran paganos y celebraban el final del verano el 31 de octubre, con una fiesta llamada Samhain. Tenían miedo del invierno, y pensaban que los muertos y los malos espíritus volvían a la vida en esa noche. Por eso se disfrazaban de brujas, fantasmas, esqueletos, y hacían grandes hogueras, para ahuyentarlos.

En el año 43 después de Cristo, los romanos invadieron a los celtas y sustituyeron la fiesta celta por otra parecida llamada Pomona. Pomona era la diosa romana de los jardines y árboles frutales. Por eso los colores de Halloween son naranja (cosechas) y negro (muerte).

Después fueron los ritos Cristianos los que sustituyeron esta fiesta, poniendo el día de todas las almas el 1 de noviembre. En inglés se llama All Hallows’ Eve, derivando en la forma corta que actualmente conocemos: Halloween.

En Irlanda y Escocia se seguía celebrando la fiesta Celta, a pesar de la invasión Romana. La tradición de Halloween llegó a Estados Unidos debido a la gran cantidad de irlandeses que emigraron allí. Halloween ahora solo es fiesta y diversión. 

The origins of Halloween go back very far, to the ancient Celts, in the British Isles. They were pagans and celebrated the end of the summer on October 31, with a festivity called Samhain. They were afraid of winter and they associated it with death and evil spirits. They made big fires and dressed as witches, ghosts and skeletons to scare them.

In 43 AD Romans invaded the Celts and substitute Samhain for Pomona. She was a Roman goddess of gardens and orchards. The colours of Halloween are orange (harvest) and black (death).

After the Roman invasion, Christian rites substituted pagan rites. The 1^st of November was the day of all saints and it was called All Hallows’s Day and the night before was called All Hallow’s Eve. This was shortened to Halloween.

In Ireland and Scotland Halloween went on for a long time. The Halloween customs were brought to the United States because of the important Irish immigration. Today Halloween is just party and fun.
